FUGE (a Lifeway ministry) is a week long camp for Middle and High School students.  There are locations all over the US throughout the summer.  The week is filled with fun recreational activities, Bible study, and worship!  It is really a blast and a life changing week with other students in God’s word!

  • Location: North Greenville University (7801 North Tigerville Road, Tigerville, SC 29688)

  • We are still in need of adult leaders to chaperone so if you are a parent and would like to go as an adult chaperone please email boriley@universityhills.org

Want a 30 second snapshot of a week at camp?

“Jesus Is My Life” Student Series Starts This Wednesday!

Describe your life in a sentence.  What is your life all about?  What motivates you?  What helps you?  What are you building your life on?  What are your dreams and passions?  What did you wake up thinking about this morning?  There is only one person big enough and worthy enough to be your everything.  Can you say this: “Jesus is my life“?

I want to invite all middle and high school students to join me as we study Romans 12 together on Wednesday nights at 6:15.  The aim of this study is to answer the question: “What does it look like when Jesus is our everything?”

Wednesdays at 6:15pm in Ignite on January 15, 22, and 29th we will be studying what the Bible says about Heaven, Hell, and the Return of Christ.  The aim of this study is that students would live here and now with an eternal perspective.

Every Sunday at 9:15am the students and their leaders gather in the Student Center and study the Bible in small groups.  This is a great way for students to get plugged into the student ministry and the Bible.  We are using the Gospel Project as the curriculum for these small groups.  More info about the Gospel Project can be found at gospelproject.com.

Get Pumped: Squat Time!

The first spiritual discipline we covered in Ignite was the personal Bible study and prayer time commonly referred to as a “quiet time”.  For a number of reasons I have recently chosen to call this time “Squat Time”.  So as you prepare to do some squats to grow in godliness here’s some things to keep in mind:

2 Timothy 3:16-17 says that “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for… training in righteousness.”  The Bible, which is more accessible now than ever, can start to feel quite common place.  However, this book is anything but common.  It is the very words of God which are useful in growing us in Christ-likeness!  Approach your squat time with anticipation and awe!

What should you do during your squat time?  Here’s a sample squat time that I have found very beneficial:

  • Pray: ask the Lord to speak to you and use His word in your life
  • Write: make a list of who/what you’d like to pray for (but don’t pray through the list yet)
  • Read: work your way through the passage for the day (Discipleship Journal Bible Reading Plan is a helpful tool… there’s an app too)
  • Circle Key Words: highlight connecting words like “therefore”, thoughts about God, various commands and promises, etc…
  • Write: slow down and write out a verse(s) that stand(s) out in your reading, think through what this means in context and how it applies
  • Pray: go back to your list and pray for the people/things with the application of the passage in mind

I’m trusting the Lord to use His word in our lives to make us like Christ!  Get started, don’t give up, keep your eyes on the goal, and have your hope securely anchored in Jesus alone as your Savior and the One who gives you power to have a squat time and grow in godliness through it!

“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.  For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”  2 Corinthians 3:18

Students: Get Pumped!

Image

1 Timothy 4:7 says that we are to train (or discipline) ourselves for godliness.  Like an athlete works out, like a musician practices, and like a student studies we are to train ourselves for godliness!  In the most important way possible: Get Pumped!

Donald Whitney’s book “Spiritual Disciplines for the Christians Life” has thirteen chapters filled with numerous disciplines we may employ in order to train ourselves for godliness.  In ignite on Wednesday nights at 6:15 from July 24 through the end of summer we will be examining, modeling, and applying these five: personal Bible study/prayer, fasting, evangelism, stewardship, and community.

Let’s allow 1 Timothy 4:7-10 to serve as our orientation to this gym.

Training is Tough:
1 Timothy 4:7-8 compares disciplining ourselves for physical strength with disciplining ourselves for godliness.  Anyone who has played a sport or an instrument knows that the amount of commitment, difficulty, and even pain at times to persevere through training can be quite high.  Let’s expect nothing less as we press on to train ourselves for that which is more valuable.

Goal is Godliness:
“Train yourself for godliness.”  We must keep our eyes on the prize!  The goal for enduring in this training is to love what Jesus loves, hate what Jesus hates; to think like Him, act like Him, and speak like Him.  Our goal is Christ-likeness.  In order to practically grow in godliness we must persevere in the disciplines.

Hope in Him:
1 Timothy 4:10 says that “to this end we labor and strive because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially to those who believe.”  Doing the disciplines cannot earn a lick of righteousness for you.  Isaiah 64:6 says that all of our righteous deeds are like filthy rags.  Our hope must be in Jesus alone to be our Savior.  And then even as we train for practical godliness through the disciplines, our hope must be in Jesus as the one who enables, sustains, and helps us every step of the way.  The weaker you realize you are and the stronger you realize Jesus is, the better off you will be in this gym as you fix your eyes and hope on Him!

Can’t wait to see you in the gym this summer.  GET PUMPED!

Students: Glorify God in Your Body

main pic

We live in a culture confused about sexual purity.  Thankfully, Scripture is not silent on this subject.  1 Corinthians 6:12-20 is one place where the truth clears up the confusion.  Here are some resources to help you think through this topic with your students:

  1. What You Do With Your Body Matters: in a number of ways 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 is emphasizing the truth that our bodies and what we do with them are important to the Lord.  This is a crucial truth in a culture that promotes sexual immorality because of its low view on the human body.  We can worship God with our minds and bodies.  Discussion Guide 1- What You Do With Your Body Matters
  2. Understanding the Covenant of Marriage: Paul points out that the “one flesh” union being demonstrated in sexual immorality perverts this covenant sign for marriage.  By God’s grace we should preserve this covenant sign for ourselves and others to be shared only between a husband and a wife.  We can worship God by keeping the marriage bed pure.  Discussion Guide 2- Understanding the Covenant of Marriage (1)

  3. Flee Sexual Immorality and Run to Jesus: Jesus cleanses all kinds of sexual sin (1 Corinthians 6:9-11), Jesus has purchased believers by His precious blood, and the Holy Spirit dwells within believers to make us holy.  We need to see past the deceptive allure of all kinds of sexual immorality, that only Jesus satisfies.  We can worship God by running to Jesus as the only truly satisfying One.  Discussion Guide 3- Flee From Sexual Immorality and Run to Jesus
